Okay so if you’ve been anywhere near Twitter (or a TV, or literally any human being who watches football) the last day or two, you already know. Germany is out. The Netherlands is out. Round of 32. Gone. And honestly? I’m still not over it.

Let’s talk about it.

Germany Losing to Paraguay Still Doesn’t Feel Real

Four World Cups. FOUR. That’s how many titles Germany’s got sitting in the trophy cabinet, and yet here we are, watching them get sent home in the Round of 32 by Paraguay of all teams. Not saying Paraguay doesn’t deserve it — they clearly do, 120 minutes plus penalties is no joke — but come on. This is Germany we’re talking about.

The match went to extra time, nobody could find a winner, and then it all came down to penalties (is there anything more stressful in sports than a shootout, genuinely). Paraguay held their nerve, Germany didn’t, and that’s the ballgame. Or the… football game. You know what I mean.

I keep seeing people online asking “wait how did this even happen” and honestly, that’s the World Cup for you. This is exactly why we watch.

And Then the Netherlands Went Out Too

As if one shock wasn’t enough for one week, the Dutch followed Germany right out the door. Also on penalties (seeing a pattern here?). The Netherlands have been reliable World Cup performers forever — Round of 16 or better basically every single tournament for over a decade, quarterfinals just four years ago — so watching them bow out this early is kind of a lot to process.

I don’t think there’s one single reason for it either. Some folks are pointing fingers at squad depth, others are saying it’s tactics, some are just chalking it up to penalties being pure chaos (which, fair). Either way, another giant is gone before we even hit the Round of 16.

So What Does This Mean Going Forward?

Honestly? The bracket just got a whole lot more interesting. Paraguay’s reward for beating Germany is a Round of 16 date with whoever wins between France and Sweden, and I don’t know about you but I am VERY here for that matchup.

Meanwhile everyone’s attention is drifting toward the teams still alive and kicking. Norway’s looking scary good right now, mostly because Erling Haaland is doing Erling Haaland things again. If you’re into the Golden Boot race at all, keep an eye on him, because he’s not slowing down anytime soon.

This Is Why the World Cup Hits Different

Look, this is exactly why the World Cup only happens every four years and why it’s such a big deal. Reputation means nothing once the knockouts start. Doesn’t matter how many stars are in your squad or how many trophies you’ve won before — one off night and you’re on a plane home. That’s brutal, but it’s also kind of the whole point, right?

USA, England, and everybody else still in this thing better be taking notes, because with 48 teams in the mix this year, literally nobody is safe. Not even the big dogs. Especially not the big dogs, apparently.

Wrapping This Up

Two heavyweights down, and we’re not even at the Round of 16 yet. The road to the final on July 19th just got a whole lot messier (in the best way possible), and if the tournament keeps going like this, buckle up — because there’s probably more chaos coming.
