United were expected to win this match, and they did so comfortably. That matters because straightforward fixtures have not always been straightforward for Manchester United in recent years.
Carrick’s side showed greater purpose in possession and looked more comfortable attacking space. The forward players also appeared to have a clearer understanding of their roles, while the distances between the lines were generally easier to manage.
The clean sheet was equally encouraging.
None of this proves that Carrick has completed United’s revival. It does suggest that the club may finally be moving in a more convincing direction.
Matheus Cunha Opened the Door
Sabah had survived the opening 25 minutes when Manchester United finally found their breakthrough.
Matheus Cunha provided it.
United moved the ball towards the left before Patrick Dorgu delivered a low cross into the area. Cunha attacked the near-post space and forced the ball beyond the goalkeeper.

The Portuguese midfielder’s goal against Sabah was not spectacular, but it demonstrated one of his most valuable qualities: his ability to arrive in dangerous positions when United need him.

His importance to Carrick’s Manchester United goes beyond goals. Fernandes continues to take responsibility when the team needs creativity, leadership or a difficult pass.
Younger players now surround him, and United have added new attacking options. Even so, Fernandes remains one of the players Carrick will expect to influence important matches.
Benjamin Šeško’s Goal Could Be a Major Positive
The most encouraging moment of the first half may have arrived just before the interval.
Benjamin Šeško scored.
The Slovenian striker ran between Sabah’s centre-backs, went around the goalkeeper and rolled the ball into an empty net. It was a confident finish from a centre-forward who has recently returned from injury.
Šeško had been sidelined with a shin problem for almost three months. He then scored after coming off the bench against Everton and followed that performance with another goal against Sabah.
Two appearances. Two goals.
That is a promising return for the 23-year-old.
Carrick has spoken about Šeško’s physical strength, pace and ability to attack the space behind defensive lines. Those qualities were visible at Old Trafford.
The timing could also prove useful because Manchester City are next.
Is Benjamin Šeško the Striker Manchester United Need?
Manchester United have spent years searching for a dependable long-term centre-forward.
Šeško has the physical profile to become one.
He is tall, quick and comfortable attacking space behind a defensive line. At 23, there is also plenty of room for further development.
His link play can become more consistent, while United will need to improve the supply into him when opponents defend deeply. Nevertheless, his potential is obvious.
Šeško also gives Carrick something different from forwards who prefer receiving the ball to feet.
His movement alone can change an attack.
A centre-back who fears a run behind the defensive line may hesitate to step into midfield. That hesitation can create space for Fernandes, Cunha and United’s wide attackers.
If Šeško stays fit and continues scoring, Carrick could have an important attacking weapon for the remainder of the season.
Kobbie Mainoo Is Beginning to Look Important Again
Another encouraging feature of United’s performance was the midfield contribution of Kobbie Mainoo.
Mainoo looked comfortable in possession and helped United move the ball with greater control.
His talent has never been difficult to identify. The bigger challenge has been finding the right midfield structure to allow him to use that talent consistently.
The level of opposition must be considered, but Mainoo’s performance suggests he could become an increasingly important part of Carrick’s plans.
Manchester United have spent enormous amounts attempting to solve their midfield problems. Developing a player from their own academy into a key starter would be particularly valuable.
Patrick Dorgu Gave Manchester United Width
Patrick Dorgu also produced an encouraging performance.
His contribution to Cunha’s opening goal was important, but his overall positioning gave United useful width on the left.
Modern full-backs are expected to defend wide areas, support attacks, press opponents and sometimes move into midfield. Dorgu handled those responsibilities effectively against Sabah.
His positioning also allowed Cunha to move inside into more dangerous areas instead of remaining permanently near the touchline.
These combinations may look like small tactical details, but they can become extremely important as a team develops.
The strongest sides do not simply contain good individual players. Their movements also make one another more effective.
The Clean Sheet Matters to Carrick
Four goals will naturally dominate the headlines, but Carrick may be equally pleased with the clean sheet.
Manchester United defended without conceding despite Sabah creating a few moments of danger.
Joy-Lance Mickels had an opportunity that could have made the contest more uncomfortable, but United dealt with the threat and protected their advantage.
A clean sheet does not suddenly mean the defensive problems have disappeared. Stronger opponents will test United’s organisation far more severely.
Even so, defensive improvement often begins with simple foundations. Becoming harder to score against is one of them.
Sabah Deserve Some Perspective
The 4-0 scoreline should not diminish Sabah’s achievement in reaching Old Trafford.
The Azerbaijani club were founded in 2017 and were making their first Champions League league-phase appearance.
Their route to the competition included qualifying rounds and a play-off victory over Hapoel Beer-Sheva.
There was also a small piece of Champions League history at Old Trafford, with Sabah fielding a starting XI made up of 11 different nationalities.
The financial and sporting gap between the two clubs is enormous. Once United found their rhythm, that difference became increasingly obvious.
Sabah still deserve credit for reaching this stage of European football.
Carrick’s Manchester United Still Have Plenty to Prove
Perspective is essential after Manchester United 4-0 Sabah.
United produced exactly the sort of performance expected from a club with their resources and European history. The danger would be treating the result as proof that their revival is complete.
Carrick’s side still need to show consistency against stronger opponents.
They must handle aggressive Premier League pressing, defend against elite forwards and produce results in difficult away matches. Most importantly, they need to demonstrate that good performances can become a pattern rather than isolated moments.
Manchester United have produced encouraging nights before.
The challenge has usually been what comes next.
This time, the next test arrives almost immediately.
Manchester City are waiting.
Manchester United vs Manchester City Is the Real Test
The Manchester derby will ask very different questions of Carrick’s team.
Sabah were primarily testing United’s ability to break down a team with fewer resources. Manchester City will test their ability to defend, compete for possession and remain composed under pressure.
City will want control of the ball. They will press United higher up the pitch and look for spaces around the midfield.
Then there is Erling Haaland.
The Norwegian striker gives City a completely different level of threat in front of goal.
For Carrick, the derby is therefore a much stronger indicator of United’s progress than the Champions League opener.
Šeško’s return provides another attacking option, while Cunha and Fernandes enter the match with confidence.
A strong performance against City would make the conversation around Carrick considerably more serious.
What Has Michael Carrick Changed at Manchester United?
Carrick’s influence is easier to identify through principles than through one dramatic tactical transformation.
United appear more comfortable moving the ball quickly and attacking space. Their forwards have freedom to interchange, but there is also greater structure behind those movements.
Carrick has another useful quality: flexibility.
Against some opponents, United may benefit from mobile forwards who exchange positions. Against others, Šeško’s ability to occupy centre-backs and run behind the defensive line could provide a more direct route to goal.
The best teams are rarely dependent on one attacking plan.
Manchester United are beginning to develop alternatives.

Sabah provided a relatively comfortable introduction, but United’s remaining league-phase fixtures will offer much tougher tests.

By January, those fixtures should provide a much clearer picture of where Carrick’s Manchester United really stand.
Can Manchester United Win the Champions League 2026/27?
Winning the Champions League this season would still represent a major surprise.
Paris Saint-Germain are attempting to win a third consecutive European title. Arsenal reached last season’s final and began this campaign with an away victory over Napoli. Real Madrid remain perennial contenders, while Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Barcelona possess the quality to go deep into the tournament.
Manchester United belong in the competition.
Whether they belong among the strongest contenders is another matter.
A realistic objective should be steady progress. United need to perform well in the league phase, reach the knockout rounds and then see how far the momentum can carry them.
European football has produced unexpected stories before.
For now, progress matters more than predictions.
United’s Champions League Return Matters Beyond One Result
There is another reason this Champions League campaign is important for Manchester United.
The club needs to become accustomed to playing at this level again.
For previous generations of great United teams, Champions League football was part of the normal rhythm of the season. League matches were followed by European nights, and elite players became comfortable with that pressure through repetition.
United lost that rhythm in recent years.
Returning to the competition is therefore only the beginning.
Staying there matters even more.
Carrick’s job is not simply to produce one enjoyable European campaign. His bigger challenge is to make Champions League football feel normal at Old Trafford again.
Is Manchester United Finally Back?
Not yet.
The phrase has also been used too often around the club, so it is probably better to judge Carrick’s team by progress rather than nostalgia.
Manchester United do not need to recreate the teams of 1999 or 2008. Those sides belonged to different eras.
Carrick needs to build a successful Manchester United for this generation.
There are encouraging pieces already in place.
Šeško is scoring again. Cunha provides aggression in attack. Fernandes remains capable of deciding matches. Mainoo can become an important midfielder, while Martínez brings character and quality to the defence.
There is also a useful combination of youth, pace and experience.
What United need now is consistency.
No transfer window can guarantee that.
Manchester United 4-0 Sabah: What We Learned
The result was convincing without needing to be treated as a revolution.
United have attacking options, while Šeško’s return could become particularly important. Cunha looks dangerous when he moves into central areas, Fernandes remains central to the team’s creativity and Mainoo continues to strengthen his case for a major role.
Most importantly, Carrick has Manchester United playing Champions League football again.
Those are meaningful positives.
The Manchester derby will reveal whether they can translate them into something more substantial.

Old Trafford has witnessed far greater European nights than this one.
Barcelona. Bayern Munich. Real Madrid. Juventus. Roma.

A 4-0 victory over Champions League newcomers Sabah will not join that list, and it does not need to.
